E. coli STEC bacterial testing. Researcher and chemist performing an assay on a sample from an agar medium (in petri dish) presumed to contain Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) bacteria. The toxin produced by these E. coli strains is known as shiga-like toxin (verotoxin). It acts on the lining of blood vessels, causing bloody diarrhoea and potentially fatal kidney failure. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture. For a close-up of the test card being used here, see image C021/5093.
