About the beginning of Marchis a very suitable time to plant, using Vines raised from eyes, and grown into well-ripened canes the previous season. Theloose soil should be shaken from their roots, and those whichhave grown in a circular direction should be uncoiled. Inplanting, make a hole large enough to accommodate the rootscomfortably; and the soil should be laid over each root withthe hand until all are covered, when the surface may betrodden down and dressed up with a spade, watering well withtepid water. There will be little signs of growth until afterthey have been planted two or three weeks, and no extra heatshould be applied in order to induce them to start the buds are bursting, the ventilators may be partiallyclosed on cold nights, but a. A Spur-pruned Peach tree, cool temperature and short-jointed wood are better thana warm one and feeblegrowth. If the canes are—say 6 or 7 ft. in length—they should be out backwhen planted to 2 ft. fromthe bottom, and only threeof the buds left should beallowed to grow, each shootproduced by them having awire to itself. These maybe allowed to grow to the topof the house. When prunedin autumn the two side-rodsshould be cut away, andthe centre one alone retained with 2 or 3 ft. more of youngwood than it started with at the beginning of the young wood left will throw out several side-shoots whenstarted the following season. Two bunches may be allowedto remain on the strongest side-shoots, none of which shouldextend beyond the side-wires or one leaf beyond the leading rod and crop may be increased annually at thesame rate until the top of the house is reached.
