Local legend has it that Eliza and Mary Chalkhurst, known as the Biddenden Maids, were born in 1100 joined together at hips and shoulders. They lived together for 34 years. When one suffered a fatal illness and died the other refused to be separated and died some 6 hours later. They left their property to the poor of Biddenden.
