The InterIslander crosses the Cook Straight and connects New Zealand's North and South Islands, Picton to Wellington. The ferry carries passengers and freight. It is part State owned and KiwiRail sell it as "A Great Journey of New Zealand." The Cook Strait crossing provides the passengers with some very beautiful scenery through the Marlborough Sound as well as a chance to spot ferry links with the KiwiRail service from and to Christchurch. It is an extremely popular route with tourists who make the 6 hour journey between Christchurch and Picton and then take the InterIslander to North service was closed for two years following the KIakoura earthquake in November 2016 but reopened in August 2017 for freight and 1st December 2018 for passengers.
