After more than 50 years shoeing Avon and Somerset 's police horses , force farrier Monty Ball (64) is about to hand over the business to his son Andrew . Monty , the fourth generation of his family to shoe policehorses at their Winford Forge near Bristol , has fitted over 31,000 shoes which are made by him on the forge that has been in his blacksmith family for 10 generations . He doesn't intend to stop shoeing the horses ... just let the fifth generation run the business side . 7 October 1991 Picture by Roger Bamber
