Lab on a chip being held in a gloved hand. These devices are used for numerous applications, from medical tests to water quality monitoring to detecting the signatures of life on other planets. The eight holes on this microchip are ports that can be filled with fluids or chemicals. This chip, developed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), is designed for use on the International Space Station (ISS). The portable, handheld Lab-on-a Chip Application Development Portable Test System (LOCAD-PTS) has been used in orbit since December 2006, allowing ISS crew members to monitor their environment for harmful contaminants.
