Horatio Gates Spafford (1828-1888) was a prosperous American lawyer, best known for writing the words to the hymn "It Is Well With My Soul," following a family tragedy in which four of his daughters died when the steamship they were traveling on was struck by an iron sailing vessel while crossing the Atlantic.
