HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, DRAWING

High blood pressure in the resting state. There are several causes of high blood pressure. The blood vessels may be constricted due to an excess of renin (produced in the kidney) which combined with a substance produced in the liver can lead to the production of angiotensin and hypertension. High blood pressure can also be a genetic disease or related to an imbalance in prostaglandin secretion. When high blood pressure is a sign of an underlying disease, it is called symptomatic. The underlying disease may involve the kidney, the adrenal glands, or an anomaly of the aorta. Depending on the cause, high blood pressure can be treated by medications (beta blockers, other drugs) or surgery.
