Apollon laser. A researcher in the amplification room of the experimental Apollon laser, the first laser in the world designed to deliver a power of 5 PW (petawatts, million billion watts) when it becomes operational in 2017. Apollon is a Ti:sapphire laser: its source of optical gain is a sapphire crystal doped with titanium ions. It is a tuneable laser capable of generating ultrashort powerful pulses of intense energy. It will be used to investigate aspects of particle physics, astrophysics, and the quantum properties of the vacuum. Photographed at Saclay Nuclear Research Centre, Paris, France.
