Clara Barton ran the Missing Soldiers Office here after the American Civil War, Washington
Clara Barton's Office of Missing Soldiers, Washington DC. Clara Barton maintained her offices on the 3rd floor of this building on Seventh Street from 1865 to 1868. She not only worked her, she also lived in a small apartment next door to the office. From here she led an effort to identify 13,000 unknown dead soldiers at Andersonville, GA and launched a national campaign to identify soldiers missing during the Civil War. The history of this building was lost over the century after Barton moved out, but after the GSA acquired the building in 1997, workers cleaning out the third floor discovered the sign and other artifacts from Barton's tenure, and further investigation revealed that the third floor had remained virtually unchanged due its consequent use as a storage space. The office will be restored as part of a redevelopment plan and hopefully help educate visitors about Barton's important work for veterans and their families.
