Davison's Mill, in Stelling Minnis, Kent, England

Davison' Mill is a classic example of a Kentish smock mill, built in 1866 by Holman's of Canterbury to replace a post mill. In 1923 Holman's also supplied a Ruston & Hornsby oil engine; as so often, what was originally a supplementary drive soon replaced wind power altogether, and the sails stopped turning in 1925. However, the windmill was restored ten years later, after which the two forms of power were used in combination until the mill closed in 1970, at which time it was the last commercially working windmill in Kent. It was subsequently purchased by Kent County Council, although it is managed by the Stelling Minnis Windmill and Museum Trust, who open it to the public. The 1923 oil engine has also been preserved in situ.
