Itsent out more soldiers during the Revolutionary Warthan any other section of the colonies in proportion topopulation. Thomas Hartley, a most valiant and distinguishedcolonel in the Revolutionary War from Yorktown, amember of Congress of the County from 1789 to 1800,and a Major-General of the Pennsylvania Militia, wrotefrom Yorktown, under date of March 17, 1779, to HisExcellency Jos. Reed, Esq., President of Pennsylvania,as follows :. YORK IN THE REVOLUTION. 197 Upon my arrival here I found many of the inhabitants dissatisfied withthe determination of the council concerning the York election. Theythought it hard that a majority of the electors should be deprived of aRepresentative in Council for years. They knew that they had been as patriotic as any; that the Yorkdistrict had armed the first in Pennsylvania, and had furnished moremen for the war and lost a greater number of men in it than any otherdistrict on the Continent of the same number of inhabitants. At FortWashington only, they lost 300 men, not SO of which have ever distressed parents and widows daily evince the melancholy truth.
