Pope Francis and Virginia Raggi (R), Mayor of Rome, attend the Immaculate Conception celebration at Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) in Rome, Italy. Since 1953, the Pope as Bishop of Rome visits the column of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza di Spagna to offer expiatory prayers commemorating the solemn event. It was placed here on September 8th 1857 and commemorates Pope Pius IX's proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception which states that Mary is the only human being who was born without original sin.
