The last survivor of Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn’s powerful 18in 0-6-0STs at Backworth. These superb giants were more powerful than a Hunslet Austerity. No. 16 was the last survivor and is caught here pulling away from Eccles Colliery on the Backworth system. These 53 ton engines constituted one of the most powerful industrial types ever built in Britain and although these locomotives had to be given time when starting away with heavy loads, they very quickly dug their heels in and their massive free steaming boilers ensured excellent performance. At 85 per cent boiler pressure these monoliths developed a tractive effort in excess of 26,000lbs — higher than a main line ex LMS 4F 0-6-0. Text from book, Steam, Soot and Rust by Colin Garratt
