Open-pit coal mining Cottbus Nord near Cottbus, Lower Lusatia, Brandenburg, Germany. Huge open-pit coal mining by the Vattenfall, the Swedish state-owned power company, on the site of the Sorbian village of Lacoma (Sorbian: Lakoma) near Cottbus, Lower Lusatia, Brandenburg, Germany. The nearby Janschwalde power station fires raw brown coal from this open-pit mining. Approximately two dozen of Sorbian villages inhabited by the Lusatian Sorbs (Sorben) were demolished in order to clear the space for open pits. The village of Lacoma was demolished in 1989 and the Sorbian inhabitants were resettled from here to a new location.
