Mongolians circle a wooden pole adorned with silk scarves for good luck at the Gandantegchinlen Khiid known as Gandan Monastery, Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia. This monastery built from 1838 onwards is the most important in the country spared in the Communist purges of 1937. The white building in the backgroound is the Migjid Janraisig Sum
