Two girls and a teacher in a kindergarten class. In the Dohnavur compound. Half-tone engraving from a photograph by Mr. Penn of Ootacamund (now known as Ooto), in the Tamil Nadu region of Southern India, c1912. The image relates to the Church of England Zenana Mission’s nursery and compound in Dohnavur, also in Tamil Nadu and about thirty miles from the southern tip of India. The compound was run by Amy Wilson-Carmichael and sought to promote Christianity among babies and children (at the time only girls, many who were victims of temple prostitution).
