The suppressionof the abbeys reduced matorially the membership in the Houseof Lords, since the abbots office had become extinct; but theplaces of the mitred abbots were taken by members of a newnobility of Henrys own creation to whom monastic lands weregiven outright or sold at absurdly low prices.
