This experiment has been in progress since 1897, the objectbeing to test the effects of different manures in improving pasture. The Soil is a stiff clay lying on Boulder Clay. The field hasprobably been under pasture for over 30 years, and at thebeginning of the experiment was worth only a few shillings anacre. It was under cultivation during the earlier part of thenineteenth century and has evidently been in a very exhaustedcondition when laid down to pasture. The field is divided into 11plots which are each 3JL acres in area -^ acre of each plot isfenced off each year in a different part of the plot, and cut for hay,while the remainder is grazed by sheep. The sheep are carefullyselected and weighed at intervals of four weeks, and are fastedbefore being weighed. Each plot is stocked with the most suitablenumber of sheep. The field is stocked in 1903 with half-bredwedder and ewe hoggs, most of which have been bred on thefarm. Their average value (
