He had always a latent martial enthusiasm,and though his whole life had been a peaceful one,yet a facility in the use of carnal weapons seemed asecond nature, and at this time, he, with a number ofother young men, went to the Mayor and were swornin as a special body of police, who patroled the streets,well armed. Mr. Beecher bore his joistol, and was de-termined, should occasion arise, to use it. But asusual in such cases, a resolute front once shown dis-solved the mob entirely.
