A sweet gum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua) grows along the edge of Sardis Lake, May 31, 2015 in Batesville, Mississippi. The 98,520-acre reservoir is divided by Sardis Dam, which was created as a means of flood control after the Great Flood of 1927. The dam was authorized following the Flood Control Act of 1936.
