IKACK RAIL—ONE-HALF ACTUAL bIZK Referring again to cross section of track, the construc-tion will be readily understood. The slot rails are of Bes-semer steel rolled to the section shown, and weigh 40pounds per yard. All the bolts, tie-bars, etc., are of bestStaffordshire wrought iron. The track rails are thegirder pattern of 65-pound Besse-mer steel. The grippers used are Colamspatent. They are hung on the gan-try carried by the bogie axles : thelower jaw is actuated by a verticalscrew spindle, the upper jaw beingfixed to a steel plate locked to thisgantry. The gripper is so con-structed that it can be raised out ofthe conduit and hung entirely clearof the roadway, allowing the car tobe run on an ordinary line, in thedepot or elsewhere. It can also, incase of breakage, be taken out en-tirely and replaced by another inabout seven minutes at any part ofthe road where a gripper hatch maybe. Both jaws are faced with softcast iron dies which can be renewed in five minutes whenworn out.
