Hiram Vorce, born Sept. 10, 1847, at TIMOTHY VORCE. < THE VORCE FAMILY 9 •Timothy Vorce sailed on the lakes for many years and wasknown as one of the most fearless and determined masters onthe lakes. It is related of him that on one occasion he sailedinto Oswego with his schooner loaded with split staves, herdeckload being nearly even with the top of the rail. A long-shoremens strike was in progress, and being unwilling topay the price demanded, he set his crew at unloading the deck-load, whereupon the longshoremen assaulted the crew anddrove them back on board the vessel, whither a number of thestrikers followed and by threats of violence drove the crewinto the forecastle. Captain Vorce at this juncture came ondeck, and, perceiving the situation, ordered the rioters to goashore, which they, confident in their numbers, refused to another word he picked up a heavy handspike andstruck right and left among them, knocking two of them over-
