Luisenplatz. The square has a cross-shape and the 39-meter Grand Duke Louis I (Ludwig I) of Hesse Monument (Langer Ludwig or Langer Lui) stands in the centre of the square. On the north and south sides of the square are two fountains designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich (1908) and the Justus-Liebig Memorial (1913), designed by Heinrich Jobst, is on the east side of the square. The buildings on the square were destroyed during World War II air raids on September 11, 1944. The only building that was not completely destroyed was the late Baroque Kollegiengebäude on the north side of the square. This has been reconstructed and now houses Regierungspräsidium of Darmstadt. The Luisencenter shopping center was built between 1975 to 1977 on the south side of the square to plans by architect, Theodor Seifert. Wilhelminenhaus is located in the north-western corner of Luisenplatz and houses offices of the Regierungspräsidium. It is also home to a central branch of Deutsche Post. The Neue Darmstadt Town Hall is situated to the southeast of the Luisenplatz. The Square is a transport hub and is used by eight of the nine of Darmstadt tram lines and various bus routes. The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) and the GSI Centre for Heavy Ion Research are located in Darmstadt as is the world's oldest pharmaceutical Company, Merck. Darmstadt was an important centre for the German Art Noveau Movement, Jugendstil. Jugenstil period buildings include the Mathildenhöhe with its wedding tower (Hochzeitsturm) by Joseph Maria Olbrich, the Russian Chapel and many private homes. The Luisenplatz is the central square of the city and the Langer Lui (Long Ludwig) stands in the centre of the square, This 33 meter column commemorates Ludwig 1, the first Grand Duke of Hesse.
