Cul Mor and Cul Beag from Inverpolly GPL 4338-409
Inverpolly is the name given to a large area of western Sutherland in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, north of Ullapool. The area is a National Nature Reserve, and contains several prominent hills, rising up from a rough landscape of bogs and lochans. Most of Inverpolly forms part of the 400 km2 Assynt Estate. Major peaks in the area include Suilven, Stac Pollaidh and Cul Mòr. At the heart of Inverpolly lies Loch Sionascaig. The area was established as a National Nature Reserve in 1961 by the Nature Conservancy Council now Scottish Natural Heritage Knockan cliff shows clearly where the Moine Thrust has pushed the older Moine rocks over the younger Cambrian. We looked at the rock specimens in the visitors' centre and also outside where they have built a miniature Knockan cliff out of cut and polished slabs of the correct rocks. We then walked down the road a short way to look at the Cambrian limestones and fucoid beds in situ.
