Baldwin III of Anjou, King of Jerusalem, gives relic of Holy Blood to Thierry of Alsace, Count of Flanders, in 1148, in return for the Count's heroism during the Second Crusade. Depicted in 1800s stained glass in the Chapel of the Holy Blood, the upper chapel of the Heilig Bloed Basiliek or Basilica of the Holy Blood in the Burg, Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium.

Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium: stained glass in the Chapel of the Holy Blood, the upper chapel of the Basilica of the Holy Blood or Heilig Bloed Basiliek (Dutch) or Basilique du Saint-Sang (French), a church in Burg square. The 19th century stained glass depicts Baldwin III of Anjou, King of Jerusalem, giving a relic of Holy Blood, apparently blood washed from the body of Christ by Joseph of Arimathea, to Thierry (or Derek) of Alsace, Count of Flanders, in 1148, in return for the Count’s heroism during the Second Crusade. According to legend, when the relic arrived in Bruges in 1150, the blood in its rock-crystal phial appeared to dry, but miraculously became liquid again and would repeat this phenomenon every Friday. Today, the relic is still displayed for veneration on Fridays. The Basilica was built between 1134 and 1157 as the chapel of the Count of Flanders, it was promoted to a minor basilica in 1923. The upper chapel was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 1500s and renovated in Gothic Revival style in the 1800s.
