Five schools for the olderand four homes for the younger orphans had been engaged; but inthese institutions there were something less than one hundred it would seem almost indispensable, for the continuance ofthe system, that such progress should be made, before the Legislatureshould again assemble, as to constitute in itself a proof of the wisdomof the plan adopted, and the most powerful appeal for State aid, theexhibit was anything but encouraging to the superficial observer;still, there had been laid a foundation broad and deep, which hasstood the test of years, and upon which there has been erected asuperstructure the beauty and grandeur of which none but aprophets eye could have CHAPTER VI.
