The Volkonsky House was built in the style of Russian classicism. It was erected in 1838 in the village of Urik, Irkutsk province, where, after ten years of hard labor in Transbaikalia (1826-1836), the Volkonsky family was determined to settle. In 1845, having received permission to move to Irkutsk, Sergei Grigorievich organized the transportation of his two-story house to the site behind the Transfiguration Church. By 1847, the assembly of the house was completed, and the family was once again housed in an expanded and renovated house. A distinctive feature of the house is the presence of bay windows on the second floor (five-sided projections in the wall), designed by the Decembrist Bestuzhev, and a winter garden on the glazed veranda of the second floor. There are two staircases in the house: the front one in the center of the house, and the black one, arranged in the courtyard annex. All rooms on each floor are connected by doors and form a circular suite. At the same time, wooden ceilings, according to the Siberian tradition, free from plaster and whitewash, and high thresholds are more characteristic of a peasant Siberian dwelling.
