Beirut Lebanon, 30th April 2014. A thick brown plume covers the city of Beirut whose population is exposed to high levels of air pollution caused by high concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide a harmful air pollutant released from motor vehicles. The average concentration of nitrogen dioxide , was 58 micrograms per cubic metre of air exceeding the maximum average concentration recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO): 40 micrograms per cubic metre.
