Aneurysm treatment. Angiogram of the treatment of a ruptured aneurysm in the internal carotid artery of a 46 year old patient. The internal carotid artery carries blood to the head. A platinum coil (white, centre) has been inserted to block the flow of blood from the artery. This is a minimally invasive procedure. An aneurysm is a blood-filled dilation in a blood vessel due to weakening of the vessel wall, which may be caused by hardening of the vessel (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure or injury. Haemorrhaging of an aneurysm can be fatal. An angiogram is an X-ray technique that uses a contrast dye to highlight blood vessels.
