Laverna atra, Haw.; L. hellereUa, Laverna atra.—1 and 2, moth, natural size and magnified ; 3, chrysalis in tunnelledshoot, magnified ; 4, chrysalis in bud. During the past season the presence of Pith Moth caterpillars wasreported as much more injurious than in any previous year. In 1889enough observation was sent to me to show its presence in the country,in one locaHty near London ; in 1898, observations were sent from thesame locahty of tbe effects of the attack being noticeable; and fromSouthport, Lancashire, and from New Cross, on the edge of Surreyand Kent, I had information of what was, in the first case, certainlypresence of this Laverna atra, and in the second, apparently so, asinjurious to clusters of Apple blossom buds by tunnelling of the stemjust beneath them. But in both instances the damage was only B 2 APPLE. [1900 mentioned as a personal observation of the writers, not as a trouble
