Chochin (red giant lantern) of Hozomon (Treasure-House Gate). Senso-ji (aka Asakusa Temple). Asakusa. Tokyo. Japan
Chochin (red giant lantern) of Hozomon (Treasure-House Gate), and the Main Hall of the Temple (background). The gate was built in 942 by Taira no Kinmasa, destroyed by fire in 1631 and rebuilt in 1636 by Iemitsu Tokugawa. The Tokyo air raids of 1945 burned it down, and was rebuilt in 1964. This is the inner gate of the Senso-ji (aka Asakusa Temple), a Buddhist Temple dedicated to the Bodhisattva Kannon and the oldest temple in Tokyo (the first temple was built here in 645). Asakusa. Taito district. Tokyo. Japan.
