Queen of all Poisons monkshood leaves create interesting patterns with some dappled light on branching leaf
Aconitum is a very poisonous plant and must be treated with respect and caution it has caused death from skin contact and being eaten. The principal alkaloids are aconite and aconitine and aconitine is thought to be the key toxin. Ingestion of even a small amount results in severe gastrointestinal upset but it is the effect on the heart, where it causes slowing of the heart rate, which is often the cause of death. In Europe, the poison that was collected from Monkshood was used to kill wolves and mad dogs, hence it was also known as Wolfsbane or Dogsbane. If larger quantities of the poison are ingested then breathing will become very difficult, shortly followed by paralysis and convulsions leading to asphyxiation due to gross blood circuit failure.
