Murmansk sea port, Russia. Satellite view of Murmansk, the world's largest city above the Arctic Circle. Murmansk lies at the far North West of Russia, on the Kola Gulf of the Barents Sea and close to the border of Finland and Norway. This port is an important naval base for the Russian Northern fleet, as well as being used for fishing and freight. Although Murmansk lies within the Arctic Circle, the sea does not freeze due to the movement of warm water from the Gulf Stream. This image was taken by the Ikonos satellite, the first satellite to collect data at one-metre resolution. Image taken on 20 June 2001.
