Lost squadron aeroplane. P38 Lightning fighter aeroplane 'Glacier Girl' in flight after taking off from Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, USA, in May 2004. This plane was part of the Lost Squadron, a squadron of US Air Force planes that were forced down over Greenland in 1942 and subsequently became buried under 80 metres of ice. 'Glacier Girl' was raised from the ice in 1992. To free it, hot water was used to melt the ice above and around it and then the plane was dismantled and winched to the surface. This process took four months. The parts were taken to Kentucky, USA, and reassembled. The reassembled plane took its first flight on 26th October 2002.
