. Electric railway review . ars becoming stalled from loss of poweron railroad crossings has therefore been introduced by The NationalRailroad Trolley Guard Company, 11 Pine street, New York. One of the guards manufactured by this company is presentedin the accompanying illustration, which shows it to consist of awire mesh shaped in the form of an inverted V, extending overand along the trolley wire. An advantageous feature of this guardis is extreme lightness, those of aluminum weighing 13 ounces andthose of copper and galvanized iron weighing but 18 ounces perrunning foot. On account of this low weight it is unnecessary toprovide extra heavy poles and guys to support the guards. Toinsure perfect contact and durability the meshes are made of No. 10galvanized and copper wire and No. 9 aluminum wire. They arefitted with substantial hangers spaced five feet apart. This protec-tion can easily be installed without changes to the present overheadequipment. The construction of the National guard affords ample strength. The National Trolley Guard. and high electrical conductivity. The use of the wire net reducesthe wind resistance to a minimum and effectually prevents theaccumulation of ice, which otherwise might weigh down thewire and cause the poles or- guys to fail. The width of the singlei for one wire is 10 inches and the depth of the troughlies. Provision has been made In the design to accommodatetwo trolley wires.
