Guy de Chauliac (), French surgeon. De Chauliac was the most eminent surgeon of his time in Europe. He was physician to Popes Clement VI, Innocent VI and Urban V at Avignon, France. His Chirugia magna (1363) was used as a manual by physicians for the next three centuries. In this book, he describes surgical procedures, such as those for treating hernias and cataracts, and he describes the use of a narcotic inhalation to induce sleep in patients during surgery.
