Annie Oakley, born as Phoebe Ann Mosey on August 13, 1860, in Darke County, Ohio, was an American sharpshooter and a folk heroine. She developed hunting skills as a child to provide for her impoverished family in western Ohio. In April 1885, Annie joined “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West Show. Billed as “Miss Annie Oakley, the Peerless Lady Wing-Shot,” she was one of the show’s star attractions for 16 years. Audiences were astounded to see her shooting out a cigar from her husband’s hand or splitting a playing-card edge-on at 30 paces. She earned more than anyone except Buffalo Bill himself.
