Ford House is situated near Pathhead, about four miles south fromDalkeith. It is the same type of house as Cockburn, and was built afterit, in 1680; but it has been rather better preserved, having sufiered littlealteration either externally or internally (Fig. 1383). Hei^e we have theentrance doorway at the south-east, so that there was not the inducementto change its position in modern times, which occurs when the entrance isfound on the north side. The house is a good example of its period, and has a warm andsheltered situation on the banks of the Tyne. FOWLIS EASTER CASTLK 273 FOURTH PERIOD
