Red Hermit Crab, Dardanus calidus, from the Mediterranean Sea, Malta.


The red hermit crab uses an anemone, Calliactis parasitica, to cover his shell, which is protection his abdomen, and safe himself against predators. The anemone in return gets left over food particles. The red hermit crab can reach a size of 12cm. This species can be found in shallow waters and up to 100 m deep all across the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. They are scavengers feeding on dead organic material.
