Amundsen's Northwest Passage expedition, 1903-6. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), commanding a crew of six on the ship Gjoa, became the first to sail through the icy Northwest Passage between Canada and the Arctic. The crew spent three winters in the Arctic during this expedition. They left Oslo on 16 June 1903, taking on supplies from whalers at Dalrymple Rock in northern Greenland (first red dot). Their next stop was in September 1903 at King William Island (second red dot) at what is now called Gjoa Haven. The ship would be trapped in the ice here for two years. They left on 13 August 1905, reaching Herschel Island (third red dot) by October 1905. Amundsen skied south to Eagle, Alaska, to announce the successful passage. The ship sailed again on 11 July 1906, with Amundsen back on board, reaching Nome, Alaska (fourth red dot) on 31 August 1906. The final destination was San Francisco, USA, on 19 October 1906.
