Panoramic View of the North Devon Countryside, with Barnstaple and the Taw Estuary from the Caroline Thorpe Monument on Codden Hill.
The monument pillar erected on this site is in memory of Caroline Thorpe, who was the wife of the local MP Jeremy Thorpe. She died in a car accident in 1970. The monument was designed by Clough Williams-Ellis. Codden Hill is one of a series of ‘whale-backed’ hills formed as a result of the incredible force of colliding tectonic plates. There are great views over Barnstaple, the River Taw and surrounding countryside from here.
