An old engraving depicting slavery in the USA in the early 1800s – this illustration was captioned: A cotton field in Georgia. It is from an American history book of 1895. Slavery came with the European colonisation in the Americas. From 1526 it was common in British colonies, including the thirteen that formed the United States. The legal institution of human chattel slavery, comprising the enslavement of mainly Africans and African Americans, was prevalent in the USA from its founding in 1776, predominantly in the south. An enslaved person was treated as property that could be bought, sold, or given away. Slavery lasted in about half the states in the USA until its abolition in 1865.
