The battery continued themarch until three oclock on the morning of the 7th,when it had reached New Kent infantry and artillery were here halted, and arest until six oclock a. m. taken. The night of the6th was very dark, and, as the battery moved onthe road through the woods it was necessary to keepa man with a lantern to the front to enable thedrivers to keep in the road. It was impossible to see FIRST R. I. LIGHT ARTILLERY. 121 objects a few feet away, therefore drivers found itwise to keep well closed up. Nothing occurredduring the night to vary the monotony of the marchof the battery except as the column was passing.
