Admiral David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936), British naval commander, World War I, 1914-1918. Beatty commanded the Royal Navy's battlecruisers at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was appointed Commander-in-chief of the Grand Fleet in 1917, and Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord in 1919.
