The Fisherman’s Bastion was built between 1895 and 1902 to celebrate the 1000th birthday of the Hungarian state. Damage in WW2 was later restored


On the Varhegy Hill, the central statue of the Fisherman’s Bastion, the elevated statue of King St Stephen (Istvan Kiraly) was to face the Matthias Church (or Church of Our Lady). All elements of the Fisherman’s Bastion, and its statues, ramparts, stairs, cloisters were to harmonize with the Coronation Cathedral of the Buda Castle, where King Matthias was crowned
