Thefe appearances of the ftomach after death, throw conliderable lighton the principles of digeftion, and fhow, that it neither depends on a me-chanical power, nor contractions of the ftomach, nor on heat, but fome-thing fecreted in the coats of the ftomach, and thrown into its cavity, which there animalifes the food, or affimilates it to the nature of theblood. The power of the gaftric juice is confined or limited to certainfubftances, generally of the vegetable and animal kingdoms; and althoughthis menftruum is capable of adting independently of the ftomach, yet itis indebted to that vifcus for its exiftence and continuance.
