Colliding galaxies 3C442A, combined X-ray and radio image. Hot gas (blue) at centre, heated by the collision of the galaxies to the point where it emits X-rays, is pushing away radio-emitting gas jets (orange). The radio jets, which usually overpower such X-ray heating, are now inactive, but were being powered by a supermassive black hole at the centre of one of the galaxies. 3C442A is some 390 million light years distant, in the constellation of Pegasus. The X-ray data is from the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The radio data is from the ground-based Very Large Array (VLA) telescope array. Image published in 2007.
