Animalsthat have them oftendefend themselves suc-cessfully against the at-tacks of lions, tigers, etc., that are so power- Iful with their teeth and 3claws. They gore withthem. They can tossup quite a large animalinto the air with this animal (calledthe koodoo) they are nearly three feet long. You see that theyhave a beautiful spiral shape; indeed, the whole animal is veryhandsome. It lives in South Africa, in the woods at the sideof rivers. You might suppose that it would be rather diffi-cult to get about among the trees and bushes with such longhorns; but the koodoo manages to do this very well bythrowing his head back and letting his horns rest on his shoul-ders. Here is a drawing of a sword-fish. Its sword is made of bone, and it is so very strong that it has been known to be run. 132 INSTRUMENTS OF DEFENCE AND ATTACK. The saw-fish. The porcupine. 77
