Aboutthis time several men of theregiment were transferred tothe artillery to fill up the bat-teries that had become de-pleted during the Peninsulacampaign. While here JebStuart crossed the Potomacat Hancocks, on his raid, andCouchs Division was sent tointercept him. After a forcedmarch over the North Moun-tains, it reached the upper fords and, the men knowingthat the lower fords, which they had shortly before left, wereguarded, concluded that Jeb Stuarts cavalry were next day it was ordered back to camp, the rebel cavalry. Why this brigade wastaken off the fords when Jeb Stuarts cavalry was on ourside of the river, giving him the opportunity to escape, hasnever been explained.
